For over a decade, digital marketing in India has largely been an English-first game — websites, blogs, and ad campaigns built for the metro, English-speaking audience. New data suggests that strategy is now leaving the majority of the market untapped, and Chennai businesses are taking notice.
The Scale of the Shift
India crossed 1.03 billion internet users in 2026, but only around 200 million of them are primarily English-language users. The remaining 800 million increasingly search, browse, and speak online in their native language — and more than half of all Indian searches now happen in Hindi and regional languages including Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, and Marathi. Tamil in particular stands out as the fourth-largest regional language internet audience in the country, and one of the fastest-growing in digital content consumption.
Voice Is Accelerating the Trend
Typing in Tamil on a standard keyboard is slow and often frustrating, which is why voice search has become the default entry point for millions of users. Voice queries in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Bengali, and Malayalam are growing 40% to 60% year over year, and Google's own AI-powered Search Live feature expanded to Tamil and eight other Indian languages by March 2026 — a clear signal that regional-language search is no longer a niche use case.
Code-switching is also common: Chennai users rarely search in "pure" Tamil or "pure" English. They mix both — searching for "near me" and "best in" style queries in a blend of Tamil and English, sometimes called Tanglish, depending on convenience and context.
What This Means for Local Businesses
A business with an English-only website is, in practice, invisible to a large and fast-growing share of its most valuable local customers. Businesses that want to stay visible in this shift need genuinely written Tamil content — not machine-translated pages, which tend to read poorly and rank poorly, along with proper hreflang tagging to signal language targeting to search engines, FAQ content with natural, conversational Tamil and Tanglish phrasing, and a well-optimized Google Business Profile in both English and Tamil.
SEOAD's Approach
As a Chennai-based digital marketing agency, SEOAD has expanded its local SEO services to include Tamil and Hindi content optimization, helping local businesses reach the growing share of Chennai and Tamil Nadu audiences who search, speak, and shop in their native language — not just in English.
